Monday’s 4-0 defeat to Seneca at Allegheny College’s Robertson Softball Field occurred because the Saegertown Panthers failed to capitalize on opportunities, committed too many errors, and were held scoreless.
Saegertown completed the season as a co-champion of Region 2 with an aggregate record of 13-3.
“I still believe it is a season to be pleased of. Saegertown head coach Jenn Bowes stated, “We had a very rocky start, but they found a way to develop chemistry and really begin to pull together the big things.” “We made many moves that we did not at the beginning of the season. We began to make contact and link together more strikes.”
The defeat in the quarterfinals of Class 2A District 10 ends the Panthers’ season.
The majority of Monday’s contest was a pitchers’ duel. Mikaila Obenrader and Lauren Konkol of Saegertown and Seneca, respectively, prevented the opponent’s offense from getting started.
After four innings, the score was tied 0 each. However, the Panthers did have opportunities to score.
Saegertown was thrown out attempting to advance to third base in the second and fourth innings, respectively.
In the fifth inning, Seneca scored the game’s first run after a Saegertown error on what would have been the third out.
Bowes stated, “I believe that we did not necessarily execute the small details today.” “That was the difference.”
The Panthers committed an error in the sixth inning, during which Seneca scored two more runs. Konkol’s RBI single in the seventh inning gave the Bobcats a fourth run.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, Saegertown reached base, but it was too little, too late.
“We were every bit as aggressive and had every opportunity,” said Bowes. When it was time for us to be more aggressive and seize some opportunities, we faltered slightly.
Obenrader pitched for the Panthers with 12 strikeouts and one earned run. In 86 innings pitched, the junior finished the season with 193 strikeouts and 11 earned runs.
Rylie Braymer, Maggie Triola, Rhiannon Paris, and Obenrader all contributed to the success of Saegertown’s recordings.
On Wednesday, Seneca will face Wilmington in the semifinals of Class 2A.
