Cambridge Springs lost 13-3 versus Chartiers-Houston, but head coach Angela Mumford was happy of her team’s ‘Live by 10’ attitude.
The Blue Devils’ season ended in the first round of the Class 1A PIAA playoffs at Penn State Behrend. Cambridge committed eight mistakes and loaded the bases twice without scoring.
“I asked the girls after the game, ‘Did we really live by 10?'” We did. “We always supported each other,” Mumford added. We left too many runners on base and missed that critical hit. We had some unusual blunders, and when that occurs, it’s simply not your day. Today wasn’t our day.”
The Devils performed better than their score indicated. Chartiers-Houston led 5-2 entering the seventh inning, but an eight-run outburst made the game appear more lopsided.
The Blue Devils persevered despite a 13-2 disadvantage.
It proves we trust one other and don’t mind a deficit. “We think we can score,” Mumford added. Cambridge’s mindset. Love these chicks. I’m proud of their season.”
Cambridge missed scoring opportunities. Chartiers-Houston all-state pitcher Meadow Ferri struck out the Devils with a loaded count in the bottom of the sixth.
Ferri saved the Bucs again in the fifth inning. Three walks stacked the bases, but a timely strikeout held the Blue Devils scoreless.
Third-inning Cambridge scored. Rodgers’ right-field double scored Kylee Miller. Rodgers was nearly called out at the bat after an outfield mistake.
Maddie Dragosavac’s sixth-inning RBI double scored pinch runner Payton Leandro.
“I told them I was proud of them because they fought,” Mumford added. “They fought throughout. Those youngsters persevered. “Those kids did their best and worked hard.”
Kayla Crawford pitched six-plus innings. She allowed three runs with seven strikeouts before the sixth.
Jaydan Simmons, Jayden Newell, and Dunton were other freshmen starters.
“I have seen a ton of growth from her as a pitcher and I am excited to see what her future has in store because she’s only a freshman,” Mumford said. “At one point today you saw a freshman at short, on the mound, behind the plate, at third base, and dozens of other young ladies performing parts. Bright future.”
Eight seniors—Boylan, Butters, Klawhun, Miller, Harris, Mosconi, Rodgers, and Dragosavac—played their last game.
First, I’ll remember their heart. “They’re this team’s heart and love each other,” Mumford remarked. “You never see them point fingers at each other, they’re always supporting each other.”
