Freeland remained undefeated and scoreless in the postseason, advancing to compete for the regional championship in Division 3 girls soccer.
Tuesday at Clare, the Falcons blanked Big Rapids by scoring three unanswered goals in the second half for a 3-0 regional semifinal victory.
Since losing 5-0 to Essexville Garber, Freeland has recorded four consecutive shutouts, including a 2-0 district championship victory over Garber.
Megan Hedgesberg scored the first goal for the Falcons, assisted by Catherine Mueller. Mueller assumed control of the game, scoring on an assist from Hailee Martinez-Hines and completing the 3-0 victory with a free-kick goal.
Adelyn Senkowski, a freshman, was in goal to continue her string of shutouts.
Freeland will face Elk Rapids in the Division 3 regional final at Clare on Thursday at 5:00 p.m. with a record of 16-5-1. Elk Rapids improved to 20-0-1 with a 5-0 semifinal victory over Newaygo on Tuesday.
Midland loses a gunfight.
Tuesday at Byron Center, Portage Central ended Midland High’s season in a Division 1 regional semifinal. Both teams failed to score during regulation and the first two overtime periods, resulting in a shootout. After five shots, the score was 4-4 apiece.
Midland failed to score on the sixth attempt, giving Portage Central the 1-0 victory in the shootout. Portage Central (15-2-3) will face Hudsonville (17-2-2) in the regional final. Midland High concludes with a record of 15-5-1.
End of Frankenmuth season
Al Peterson’s first-year goal tied Frankenmuth and Flint Powers 1-1 in Tuesday’s Division 2 regional semifinal at Detroit Country Day, but Powers responded with seven unanswered goals for an 8-1 victory.
Powers faces Warren Regina for the regional championship, while Frankenmuth concludes its season with a 9-15-1 record.
