College baseball teams nationwide were selected on Monday. Teams learned their regional host places, and a few New Mexican players play for them. Arizona’s Aidan May, Brandon Zastrow, Samford’s Alex Gaeto, and Oregon State’s Jacob Kmatz are contending for a national crown.

“Yeah I mean we’re going to be in some place with a good atmosphere with some fans we’ve never been around and a lot on the line,” Kmatz added. It will be fun, and last year was fun since we were at our own house, but it will be fresh. Every game is unique and entertaining, and playing it with these folks is much better.”

Several area baseball players have advanced to the NCAA regionals.

Isotopes pitcher Gavin Hollowell also received encouraging news concerning his future. Hollowell is back in the bullpen and ready to contribute after missing the start of the season with elbow soreness. He is the Isotopes’ top Rockies pitching prospect, but he said having a reliever’s attitude helps with daily unpredictability.

“I can control what I control,” Hollowell remarked. “I don’t think about much, there’s a lot going on up there. I go out and fight when I hear my name. I ignore it. Just do my job. As much as possible, throw up a zero. Attacking what I have.

This summer, Sandia High School basketball star Sydney Benally is working out. She’s getting Division I offers playing Adidas.

“I was very fortunate to be put on that stage and I put in so much work to show out,” she remarked. “College offers were a blessing.”
